Mount Tacoma Tulip Bulbs are known for full, creamy white flowers that resemble small peonies at the close of the spring tulip season. The blooms begin with pink- and green-tinted buds before the layered petals unfold to a clean white finish. The 14- to 16-inch stems are well suited to cutting, and the double blooms last longer than many single tulips. We find the shifting bud color especially appealing because the planting changes character as each flower opens.
This pre-1924 heirloom is a Double Late tulip valued for fragrance, dense petal count, and a soft color that works easily with stronger spring tones. Its late bloom period extends the tulip display into May in many climates, after earlier bulbs have begun to fade. Mount Tacoma Tulip Bulbs are excellent for cutting beds, formal spring schemes, and clustered plantings near outdoor seating where the flowers can be appreciated up close. Like most highly bred tulips, it may flower less consistently in later years unless it receives cold winters, excellent drainage, and a dry summer rest.
Mount Tacoma Tulip Care
Plant Mount Tacoma Tulip Bulbs in full sun, or provide light afternoon shade in warmer climates to help the flowers hold longer. Choose sandy or loamy soil that drains quickly, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0 to 6.5. Avoid low areas where winter rain or melting snow collects around the bulbs.
Water once after fall planting to settle the soil. When shoots emerge, check the soil below the surface and water only when it is beginning to dry. Feed with a bulb fertilizer in fall and again as growth appears in early spring, using the package rate. After the leaves yellow, keep the planting area on the dry side during dormancy.
Remove spent flowers before seed capsules form, but leave the stems and foliage until they have fully yellowed. For bouquets, harvest when the buds are closed but showing white, and leave at least two or three leaves on each plant if you plan to keep the bulbs. In areas with mild winters, treat Mount Tacoma as a seasonal tulip or prechill bulbs before planting.
Mount Tacoma Tulip Spacing
Set bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward, spacing them 5 to 6 inches apart in garden beds. Plant in broad clusters rather than straight lines so the double flowers form a fuller late-spring display. For containers, use a pot at least 12 inches deep with drainage holes, and place bulbs slightly closer together without allowing them to touch.
Hellebores make useful landscape companions because their lower foliage supports the white tulip flowers without blocking them. Ajuga can cover bare soil at the front of a bed, and boxwoods can provide a dark evergreen backdrop that makes the creamy blooms more noticeable. In containers, pair Mount Tacoma Tulip Bulbs with bacopa or lobelia, both of which appreciate cool spring conditions and trail neatly over the pot edge.
