Mr. Stripey is an heirloom tomato with exceptional flavor and ornamental value. The vibrant yellow-orange fruit has varying bands of red and golden tiger striping. Mr. Stripey is also prized for its late blight resistance and uniformly smooth fruit that is not prone to catfacing. The vigorous indeterminate vines produce masses of yellow flowers that ripen anywhere from 80-85 days from planting. Each juicy slice of this tomato reminds you how good fresh tomatoes from the garden taste.
Mr. Stripey Heirloom Beefsteak Tomato Plant
Plant tomatoes out in the garden after the nighttime temperatures are above 50 degrees F. Choose a location with at least 6 hours of full sun and well-draining soil that holds moisture well and is rich in macro and micronutrients. Applying 2-3 inches of organic compost or well-rotted steer manure will provide enough nutrition for tomato plants to get a good start. Provide new plants with a support or strings to climb; tie in or guide new growth to keep the plants from sprawling on the ground. Indeterminate types will provide fruit continuously from late July to the first frost in fall.
Growing Mr. Stripey Heirloom Beefsteak Tomato Plant
Mr. Stripey is a late-season heirloom that begins to fruit 80 days after transplanting. The plants can be grown in a greenhouse or other covered hoop house to allow an earlier start in the spring and later harvesting in the fall.
Tomatoes can also be grown in large barrels and containers. Use at least a 5-gallon bucket or pot with a 12-inch diameter for each tomato plant. Ensure there is enough drainage in the bottom, and use a potting mix with perlite or vermiculite to increase drainage. Watering will be needed daily once plants begin to develop fruit. Let the top 1-2 inches of potting soil dry out, and water until it comes out the bottom of the container.
Watering Mr. Stripey Tomato
Tomatoes have very deep root systems and can be fairly drought resistant. Provide 1 inch of water a week if there is no natural rainfall. Drip irrigation and soaker hoses are perfect for watering since they keep excess moisture off the leaves. Tomatoes become susceptible to molds and fungal diseases when the leaves are wet.
Feeding Mr. Stripey Tomato
Mix a granular slow-release fertilizer for tomatoes or roses into the soil before planting. Apply a liquid seaweed or fish emulsion every two weeks until the first fruit appears.
