Climbing Roses are absolutely a plant that any gardener thinks of when they hear the term Cottage Garden. Graceful swags of color and fragrant blooms that intertwine with other classic climbers like Clematis. New Dawn Climbing Rose fits that image perfectly. Baby Pink, double blooms clothe this Rose completely and attract every pollinator that is in the area. This Rose retains the old fashioned rose fragrance you remember.

The climbing nature of New Dawn makes it a natural to grow up a trellis, arbor or even as a ground cover on a slope. The stems will need to be tied in for extra support and to keep it growing in the correct direction. New Dawn blooms on new growth which means it is less fussy about pruning and deadheading than a Rambling Rose. Deadheading during the summer will help to prolong the show.

New Dawn Climbing Rose Care

Climbing roses really need to be planted in a spot where they can have sun all day. Well drained, but consistently moist soil is very important for blooming. An average texture soil is acceptable, but regular mulching with an organic compost will help to enrich and bulk up the soil. Climbing Roses are not drought tolerant and will require extra irrigation during hot or dry spells. Using a drip irrigation or soaker hose will keep the foliage dry and reduce incidence of pests and disease.

Pruning of New Dawn is best done in the late winter before growth starts. It is also easier to see the overall structure with the leaves gone. Remove any dead, diseased or dying branches back to the main stem. A rejuvenating hard prune to the ground is only needed if there is extensive winter damage or disease damage. If this is necessary, new growth should sprout from the base quickly. Flowers will not form the first year after a revitalization. Fertilizing should be done once the first leaves emerge. A well balanced, slow release food will provide enough nutrients to vigorously bloom all season.

New Dawn Climbing Rose Spacing

New Dawn is quite a large climber. A width of 7-10 feet with a mature height of 18-20 feet. Make sure to attach this Rose to a very sturdy trellis or arbor that will last a long time. New Dawn Climbing rose can also be trained into an espalier on a wall.
