Old Glory Hosta (Hosta ‘Old Glory’) reveals broad, heart-shaped leaves tinted with golden-yellow centers and uneven dark green margins. It reaches about 14 inches tall while gradually forming a 36-inch wide mound. Its pale lavender flowers emerge mid-summer, stretching above the foliage for a lovely accent. Our growers appreciate its eye-catching leaf pattern and steady presence in shaded areas.

This medium-sized hosta, introduced by Hans Hansen, thrives in partial to full shade and tolerates a range of moisture conditions. Though native to Asia, it has adapted to North American gardens as a valuable perennial. Large leaves serve well in borders and mass plantings, helping conceal fading spring bulbs and adding texture among other shade dwellers. Its ability to handle varying soil qualities and mild pollution make it an outstanding selection for city environments.

Old Glory Hosta Care

Provide rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, supplementing with compost to boost organic content. Place it where morning sun or dappled light is available, but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch the leaves. Water consistently during hot spells, aiming to keep soil moderately moist but never swampy. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring supports steady growth and leaf color retention.

Remove any spent flower scapes to maintain a neat appearance, and cut back tattered foliage before winter. A layer of mulch can help protect roots in colder climates, though be mindful of slugs that may hide beneath. Container-grown specimens benefit from a good-quality potting mix and consistent irrigation, as they dry out faster than in-ground plantings. In zones with freezing winters, pots should be insulated or moved to sheltered spots to safeguard the roots.

Old Glory Hosta Spacing

Place these plants about 36 inches apart for borders or mass groupings, ensuring room for mature growth. A slightly tighter spacing may be used for a groundcover look, though dividing might be necessary over time. Containers of at least 10 inches wide and deep accommodate new transplants, allowing ample space for root expansion. Larger pots reduce watering frequency and keep the plant healthier in the long term.
