Parlor Palm is a favorite among most houseplant enthusiasts. It is extremely low maintenance and easily fits into any interior decor. The long fronds of dark green are elegant. This houseplant has been popular since the Victorian period, when no front parlor was complete without potted plants of some sort. Also known as Chameadorea elegans, it tolerates lower light and humidity levels than just about any other houseplant.
Best Locations For Growing Parlor Palm
Parlor Palm can adapt to any corner of the room. Unlike other tropical houseplants, bright lighting and high humidity can cause problems like root rot and sunburns. Parlor palm prefers to be placed in the room and left alone. Do not fear if your pets nibble at Parlor Palm's long fronds. This is not considered a toxic plant.
Parlor Palm Plant Sunlight Requirements
Low-light conditions are perfect for this tough houseplant. Bright direct or indirect light causes the leaves to burn and die back. This plant will grow well in a north- or east-facing window where few other plants can survive.
Parlor Palm Care
Parlor Palm is a reasonably slow-growing plant that does not have a robust root system. When roots begin to grow from the bottom of the pot, transplant this palm to a pot one to two sizes larger with fast-draining indoor potting soil. Repotting is not needed often. Prune off dead or dying leaf stems regularly to help keep the plant healthy. If many of the leaves begin to turn brown from the tips, this could mean that the plant is being overwatered or needs a pot with better drainage.
Watering Parlor Palm
This is a plant that thrives on neglect and prefers to dry out in between waterings. Feel the soil once a week. The top 2-3 inches of soil should feel dry before watering. Make sure to empty any water collected in the saucer after 10 minutes. Parlor Palm does not like to have waterlogged soil for any amount of time. Misting for humidity is not required, although if you do, ensure the soil is dry first.
Feeding Parlor Palm
Parlor palm is a light-feeding plant and does not require fertilizing more than once or twice during the active growing season. In the spring, feed your plant with a balanced liquid houseplant food. Use the formulation at half the recommended strength, and make sure to soak the soil well. Another application around the end of summer is all parlor Palm requires for healthy growth during the fall and winter.
