Having a difficult time growing grass in that shaded area? This mounding sedge reaches a height of 8 inches when in flower, with a width of 6 to 12 inches and will spread to form a low growing turf that does not require mowing. The grass-like foliage maintains its bright, glossy green appearance right through the fall.

A low maintenance hedge that is perfect for dry woodland garden areas where you may want to plant something and just let it do its thing. Will tolerate drought once established, is semi-evergreen and deer resistant. Winter hardy in zone 3 to 7 and would be a wonderful choice as a mass panting, groundcover, tree underplanting, shaded walkway or pathway planting and grown in a mixed planting in a pot or container. Sedge grown in a pot or container may not survive in areas where the temperatures drop below freezing for extended periods of time. The plant should be planted in the ground for winter and repotted in spring. Alternatively, the pots or containers could be stored indoors for the winter in a cool, but sunny area that is above freezing. Native to North America.

Pennsylvania Sedge Care

Grows well in shade to partial shade and will grow in full sun if it receives sufficient moisture. Prefers moist, well-drained, average garden soil and will tolerate a wide pH range.

Trim only a third off of the plant at any given time and only if necessary as the plant resents being cut back too hard.

Pennsylvania Sedge Spacing

Plants should be spaced approximately 6 inches to 1 foot apart if grown as a mass planting, in a woodland setting, shade garden, walkway or pathway planting or used in large pots or containers.
