Growing Zones
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Pink Diamond’ has some of the largest bundles of flowers of any hydrangea. Pink Diamond is a descendant of the large Pee Gee-type hydrangeas, which can reach 20 feet in height. This grafted standard tree will rarely reach more than 10 feet and is perfect for a smaller garden space. The brilliantly white flower heads stay on the shrub for months, aging to a rosy shade of pink. In the fall, flowerheads that are left on the plant provide texture and interest for the winter garden.
The massive flowerheads of Pink Diamond make fantastic cut flowers and retain their color well when dried. Pee Gee Hydrangeas are native to parts of China and Japan and are some of the hardiest hydrangeas to grow in the garden. Pink Diamond is hardy in zones 3-8, requiring only minimal protection during the winter. Pink Diamond is not considered to be drought tolerant and appreciates regular watering to support the large blooms and deep green foliage.
Pink Diamond Hydrangea Tree Care
Pink Diamond requires well-draining soil that stays sufficiently moist. Applying a 1-2 inch layer of organic material over the root zone annually will keep the soil cooler and improve moisture retention. Finely shredded leaves, arborist chips, and pine straw all are great choices for mulch and will decompose and improve the native soil. Fertilize Pink Diamond once in the spring with an extended-release, granular fertilizer. A well-balanced NPK ratio of 10-10-10 will support healthy foliage growth and large flowers. Pink Diamond flowers will keep their brilliant white and pale pink coloring no matter if the soil is acidic or alkaline.
Prune Hydrangea paniculata types hard in early spring just as the buds are forming. Pink Diamond has slightly leggy growth that responds well to pruning, making cuts just above a set of leaf buds. Regular deadheading is not necessary but will help Pink Diamond to keep a more compact shape as it grows through the summer months.
Any tree hydrangeas growing in containers should be given extra protection during the winter months. If possible, move the planter or container to a location that is sheltered from the worst of the winter weather, but still receives natural precipitation. In growing zones 3-5, insulate containers and the root zone by wrapping layers of burlap or horticultural fabric around the pot.
Pink Diamond Hydrangea Tree Spacing
Although the overall height of Pink Diamond is typically 8 feet, there will generally be an open area of 2-4 feet around the base of the trunk. Pink Diamond can be easily incorporated into any existing garden bed with other perennials and shrubs. Space each plant 6-8 feet apart to prevent crowding.
Pink Diamond can live for many years in a planter that has at least an 18-24 inch diameter. Because Pink Diamond is a tree form that is naturally top-heavy, use planters and containers with very sturdy or wide bases.
