Pinkerton Japanese Iris (Iris ensata 'Pinkerton') delights with soft pink petals spanning up to seven inches across, adding a subtle charm in early summer. The flattened blooms and intricate veins give these flowers a refined, almost artistic look above their slender, upright foliage. Stems rise to about 36 inches, perfect for introducing a vertical accent next to ponds or in mixed perennial beds. This elegant variety remains a pleasure to grow for gardeners who appreciate large, graceful iris blooms that resist deer and rabbits.

Its origins trace back to the wetlands of Japan and China, where regular moisture is abundant. The broad petals showcase gentle ripples, drawing in both bees and hummingbirds. This iris performs well as a focal point in water-adjacent plantings, or grouped in cottage-style borders for a romantic display. Winning several American Iris Society awards, it brings consistent color and interest year after year.

Pinkerton Japanese Iris Care

Plant in a loamy, acidic soil (pH near 5.5–6.5) enriched with compost for steady root growth. Irrigate frequently during active growth, especially in sunny locations, as these iris need consistent moisture to form robust blooms. Avoid letting the soil dry out, and incorporate mulch to help retain moisture. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring promotes lush foliage and abundant buds. 

Prune off spent flower stems after blooming, and remove any browning foliage toward season’s end. Container-grown plants should have plenty of water during summer heat, and should be overwintered in an area where the soil won’t freeze solid. In colder climates, add mulch around the base to maintain warmth. Divide every three to four years if bloom performance begins to diminish.

Set individual plants 24 to 28 inches apart, providing adequate airflow in row or massed plantings. A container of roughly 10 to 12 inches in diameter is generally sufficient for new rhizomes, ensuring suitable room for root expansion and space for watering.
