There is not a scent that emcompasses spring quite like Lilac, and the Pinktini Lilac (Syringa x prestoniae Pinktini) does not disappoint. While many of these fragrant beauties can be overwhelming in size, the Pinktini is manageable, upright, and low maintenance. At 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, this dwarf variety produces vibrant-pink, panicle-shaped blooms in the late spring, attracting early pollinators and making it a perfect porch-side shrub. The Pinktini does not form suckers, leaving you more time to enjoy your garden rather than taming a large plant!

Placed in full sun, the Pinktini Lilac is adaptable to many types of soil and is drought tolerant when established. The beautiful blooms make for excellent, fragrant cut flowers. Because of its smaller size, the Pinktini Lilac grows well in large containers, especially when planted with annuals or other low-growing plants near its base. Growing moderately fast, plant the Pinktini Lilac with other flowering shrubs to create a pollinator-loving hedge.

Pinktini Lilac Care

The Pinktini Lilac is not particular to the type of soil it is grown in, making it an easy fit for most gardens. For ideal growth and blooming, choose a spot that receives full-day sunlight. To plant Pinktini, dig a hole that is as deep and twice as wide as the root ball. Water this Lilac regularly in its first year to establish the roots. Lilacs can be fertilized with a balanced slow-release tree and shrub fertilizer in the early spring to encourage new growth.

To limit the shape and size of the Pinktini Lilac, pruning should be done immediately after the plant has finished flowering for the year. Lilacs set next-year blooms later in the year, so spring pruning can remove buds and limit blooming. After blooms have finished, they can be removed to give the leafy, green shrub a cleaner look through the rest of the summer and fall. When planting in a container, be sure to choose a pot that is relatively large and has adequate drainage.

Pinktini Lilac Spacing

With its compact growth, the Pinktini Lilac can be planted about 3-4 feet from other plants to allow for it to reach its natural, mature size. When planting a blooming hedge, space these shrubs slightly closer together, about 2-3 feet apart so that they grow together. The Pinktini has about 1 foot of space from its lowest leaves to the ground, so it can be paired with other low-growing annuals or perennials as fillers.
