Poquito Banana Plant (Musa Poquito) is a striking, lush and versatile plant for anyone who lives in warmer U.S. zones. Most banana plants grow tall, up to 30 feet high, but Poquito Banana reaches 3 feet high and wide, so it's a great addition to tropical gardens and containers. The large green leaves are loaded with varying dots of red as they appear and grow. It's a perfect thriller plant for containers or any area of the landscape that is wet, such as a rain garden.
Most Musas do not fruit, and the Poquito Banana Plant is grown purely for its foliage. As a dwarf version of the banana tree, Poquito can go in many more places than full-size trees. For example, the large, colorful leaves can fill in behind low-growing shrubs or in front of taller ones as an accent plant. It is a perennial in zones 9 through 12, and typically drops its leaves in winter. New growth with hints of red begins to appear again in spring.
Poquito Banana Plant Care
Poquito Banana is a tropical plant, so it needs average and frequent watering. However, allow the plant to dry out some between watering so its roots do not stay too damp. Plant this little banana in full sun or part shade, watering the hole before planting and after backfilling the hole. Give it a small amount of balanced fertilizer with the water in the hole when planting. Mulch around the base of Poquito Banana to help retain some moisture in drier climates.
Poquito Banana Plant Spacing
If placing several Poquito Bananas together in a garden bed or container, give them plenty of room, nearly 3 feet from each plant's center.
