Powerball™ Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'SMNHPLK') makes a bold statement with its globe-shaped blooms that emerge lime green and gradually soften to white, then blush pink as the season progresses. The dense flower clusters are held on sturdy stems that won’t flop in rain or wind. It typically reaches 3 to 6 feet tall and wide, creating a well-rounded shrub suitable for both smaller gardens and more spacious landscapes. Its resilient, showy display is a good choice for colder climates where bigleaf hydrangeas can struggle.
Powerball™ has an upright panicle habit with thick, woody stems and attractive green foliage that remains elegant throughout summer. As a selection of H. paniculata—native to areas of Asia—this hydrangea tolerates sun, adapts to various soil types, and resists common pests. It blends well in borders, hedges, and container plantings, and is easy to use as a backdrop or a standout specimen. The dried flower clusters also offer long-lasting beauty in fall arrangements.
Powerball™ Panicle Hydrangea Care
Place it in a spot with full sun to part shade, keeping soil evenly moist but well-draining. Enrich the planting area with compost if necessary, aiming for a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water consistently during hot spells, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring for sturdy growth. A 2–3 inch mulch layer helps lock in moisture and moderate temperature fluctuations.
Prune in late winter or early spring by cutting the stems back about one-third of their total height. This quick trim stimulates fresh buds on new wood, where flowers form. Container-grown shrubs require a high-quality potting mix and consistent watering, especially in sunny exposures. If planted in colder regions, just let it go dormant naturally—no special overwintering steps required.
Powerball™ Panicle Hydrangea Spacing
Position shrubs 3 to 6 feet apart in rows or mixed plantings to allow space for their mature width. If you’re seeking a dense hedge, planting them slightly closer will form a continuous wall of flowers with regular pruning. A container at least 14 to 16 inches wide can support the root system of a smaller specimen, though larger pots ease watering demands.
