Primrose Lilac (Syringa vul. X ‘Primrose’) is a hardy shrub with fragrant spring flowers. These flowers are buttery yellow–a rare color among lilacs. The Primrose Lilac is deer resistant and disease resistant. As an added bonus, this plant attracts pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds.
The Primrose Lilac looks attractive when grown in hedges or in the back of borders. Its mature size is 12-15 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide. This shrub has an upright, multi-stemmed growth habit. After Primrose Lilac is established, it requires very little maintenance.
Primrose Lilac Care
The Primrose Lilac thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-draining soil. A south- or west-facing exposure is best. When planting in mulched beds, keep the mulch 6 inches away from the trunk. Fertilize this lilac in the early spring using an all-purpose fertilizer or compost, and repeat in mid-summer. This plant is hardy in zones 3-8.
After the Primrose Lilac is done blooming, it should be pruned to encourage more vigorous growth. The blooming period usually ends in June or July. Remove oldest growth for renewal and prune annually to maintain shape and size. Primrose Lilac grows about 1-2 feet per year in adequate conditions.
Primrose Lilac Spacing
This shrub makes an elegant screen or border for your garden. It also looks great growing in a hedge, or in the back of perennial beds. The spacing between Primrose Lilac plants should be about 8-10 feet for a dense hedge or screen. They need to receive plenty of airflow to resist disease.
