Add some shazam to your plantings with this goof-proof accent trailer/groundcover in zesty lime, the color that makes every other color look better. ‘Sweet Caroline Light Green’ ipomoea batatas, a.k.a. Sweet Potato Vine, brings the zing all summer long, whatever the weather. In containers, or as a full and luscious groundcover, its bold tropical foliage spices up any combination. From sun to part sun, they’ll light up the landscape wherever they are placed. They average 10 inches in height but can trail up to 60 inches long in a container, or up to 36 inches as a groundcover.

Pro tip:/Fun Fact: Since they come from the same parent plants as the Sweet Potatoes we eat with butter and brown sugar, ornamental ipomoeas like Sweet Caroline have been selectively bred for sweeter-looking leaves rather than tasty tubers. So, you technically could eat them (provided they were grown without pesticides and fungicides), but it’s not as tasty.

Proven Accents® Sweet Caroline Light Green Sweet Potato Vine Care

Sweet Caroline, like her relatives, thrives on heat and humidity. In the Deep South, they can grow 36 inches in a WEEK. Fertilizer at planting on garden beds, and regular applications in container planting will encourage optimal growth. Cool temperatures will limit growth, so in cooler climates like the Pacific Northwest, it’s helpful to wait until night temperatures are reliably warm before planting to avoid sulking.

Proven Accents® Sweet Caroline Light Green Sweet Potato Vine Spacing

Ipomoeas are quite vigorous, so choose fast-growing companions, or be ready to cut back to give the other guys some breathing room. Space them 10-12 inches apart in a container, or 20-24 inches in the ground, since they can expand to 36 inches across as a groundcover.

    Hit and Miss on Plants...

Posted by Susan Womack on May 17, 2022

One of the two Sweet Potato Vine plants was nearly dead when received and is still struggling to survive. The other is flourishing. I had a similar experience with the two Coleus plants I received at the same time. One is dead and the other is alive but struggling. The other two of six plants total I received seem to be doing well although all six plants showed signs of cold damage. To be fair, we are having an exceptionally cold spring in the Pacific Northwest, but perhaps they could be shipped later in the spring or some type of insulation could be added to the boxes when shipping cold sensitive annuals to minimize cold damage.
