Pumilio Mugo Pine forms a dense, dark green evergreen mound in sunny gardens. This slow-growing conifer develops a broad, spreading shape, reaching about 3–5 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide over time. Botanically known as Pinus mugo var. pumilio, it comes from mountain regions of central and southern Europe where compact form and cold tolerance are part of its character. Our landscape designers use it often to provide permanent structure in a rock garden, foundation bed, or container.
Its short needles are held in thick clusters along sturdy branches, giving the plant a full, textured look even in winter. Pumilio Mugo Pine is evergreen, drought tolerant once established, and usually left alone by deer and rabbits. It handles dry soil better than many broadleaf shrubs, provided the site drains well. Use it beside boulders, along sunny borders, in mass plantings, or as a clipped mound in a Japanese-inspired garden.
Pumilio Mugo Pine Care
Plant Pumilio Mugo Pine in full sun for the densest growth and best needle color. It grows easily in enriched, loamy, well-drained soil, but it can also adapt to sandy or clay soils if water moves through. Soil pH can range from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, about 6.0–7.5.
Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, soaking deeply rather than giving shallow splashes. During the first growing season, keep moisture steady while roots establish, then reduce watering once the plant begins to settle in. Feed in early spring with a general-purpose or evergreen fertilizer. Pumilio remains fully evergreen through winter instead of going dormant above ground.
Prune by pinching or shortening the soft new spring growth, often called candles, if you want a tighter mound. Avoid cutting back into older bare wood, since pine branches do not reliably fill back in from leafless stems. Remove dead or damaged branches when noticed, and give container plants winter protection from harsh drying winds.
Pumilio Mugo Pine Spacing
Space Pumilio Mugo Pine 6–10 feet apart in the landscape, depending on whether you want separate mounds or a broad evergreen mass. For containers, use a 20–24 inch pot with drainage holes for a young plant, then size up as roots fill the pot.
Plant this Mugo pine with potentilla for summer flowers, allium for upright spring structure, and catmint for silver-green texture around the base. In containers, use hens & chicks at the soil surface and dianthus near the rim for a tough, sun-loving combination.
