Growing Zones
Radicans Gardenia or Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans' features fragrant double blooms on a dwarf, spreading form. The pure white, waxy flowers are about 1-2 inches wide and have a captivating, citrusy fragrance. The blooms start in late spring and continue throughout summer. This evergreen shrub stays under 2 feet tall and is ideal for containers. It also works well as a fragrant ground cover in mass plantings.
Radicans Gardenia Care
Radicans Gardenia requires partial shade to full sun. Plant it where it will receive at least 4 hours of direct sunlight with protection from hot afternoon sun, especially in warm climates. This shrub absolutely requires well-draining, acidic soil. Gardeners in areas with heavy clay or alkaline soil may want to plant this shrub in a container to ensure its longevity.
Fertilize yearly with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Prune to remove spent blooms after flowering. Water consistently for the first few growing seasons to establish a sturdy root system. Once established, Radicans, though generally drought and heat tolerant, will benefit from watering during periods of drought or high heat.
Radicans Gardenia Spacing
This prostrate shrub has a tendency to spread and should be spaced at least 2 feet apart, as measured from the center of each plant. This spacing will result in a dense ground cover effect. For a more defined shrub shape, space each plant 4 feet apart. Grow one plant in a 15-inch container for the first season.
