The Ragin Cajun Spigelia is a stunning summertime bloomer that puts on a spectacular, colorful display. Also known as Spigelia marilandica, this herbaceous perennial boasts upright, reddish-orange tubular flowers. The flowers bloom in clusters from early until late summer. Lance-shaped flowers are a deep green hue and grow along upright stems.
Native to the Southeastern United States, the Ragin Cajun Spigelia grows as a perennial in zones 5 through 9. This plant has a mounded growth habit and is an excellent choice for mixed beds, borders, and containers. Trim the stems to feature the bold flowers in arrangements. Hummingbirds are drawn to the red flowers, making this plant a nice addition to a landscape.
Ragin Cajun Spigelia Care
Spigelia can comfortably live in full sun to partial shade. Plants grown in low light may become straggly, so be mindful of how much light the plant receives. The Ragin Cajun Spigelia is not picky about the soil type but prefers rich, well-drained soil. Water this shrub when the top few inches of soil are dry, and increase the watering frequency during a dry spell. Regularly fertilize Spigelia throughout the growing season to encourage new growth.
This plant is an herbaceous perennial, so the greenery will fade after the first frost. Remove dead growth in the late winter or early spring.
Ragin Cajun Spigelia Spacing
The Ragin Cajun Spigelia is a medium-sized plant that stands 20 to 24 inches tall and spreads 20 to 24 inches wide. Plants can be spaced 20 to 24 inches apart to create a dense and full bed.
