Rainier Cherry Tree makes rare golden fruit with a red blush and a clean, firm bite. This full-size backyard orchard tree matures around 18–25 feet tall and 18–25 feet wide, covered in white spring blossoms before it shifts into heavy summer production. This is Prunus avium ‘Rainier’, valued because the medium-to-large cherries stay firm and tend to resist cracking as they color up, which can be a deal-breaker for other sweet cherries. We think it’s a smart choice when you want fruit that tastes special fresh but still holds together for canning or drying.
Rainier Cherry Tree Care
Plant Rainier Cherry Tree in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked (or in fall where winters are milder) so the roots settle in before heat or deep cold. Give it full sun and space trees about 18–25 feet apart for airflow. Plant with the graft union a couple inches above soil level and mulch lightly to keep moisture even. It prefers fertile, loamy, well-drained soil with a pH around 6.0–7.0, and will not tolerate soggy ground for long.
Growing Rainier Cherry Tree
Plan on fruiting once this cherry is established, with harvest typically landing mid to late summer and often around mid-August in many climates. This variety is not self-fertile, so you’ll need a compatible sweet cherry nearby that blooms at the same time for pollination, and it performs best with roughly 700 chill hours.
Prune to open the canopy during dormancy and do any light thinning in summer, avoiding cuts after mid-August in colder areas. Start with a strong central leader and wide branch angles early, because the crop load gets heavy and good structure prevents breakage.
Growing Rainier Cherry Tree in Containers
A Rainier Cherry Tree can be grown in a container while young, but it’s naturally a large tree, so expect ongoing root and canopy management and a short window before it needs to be planted in the ground. Use a pot at least 24–30 inches wide with excellent drainage, refresh the top few inches of mix annually, and be ready to up-pot every 2–3 years to prevent the tree from stalling out.
For container companions, pair it with rosemary and basil plants to keep the pot area productive. In the landscape nearby, underplant with lavender or thyme for pollinator activity and a tidy look.
Watering Rainier Cherry Tree
Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone evenly moist the first growing season. Later, shift to deep watering when the top few inches of soil dry, especially during heat. Leaves that wilt in afternoon and don’t rebound by evening usually mean it’s time for a longer soak.
Feeding Rainier Cherry Tree
Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, and avoid heavy nitrogen late in the season because it can delay dormancy. A second light feeding in early summer can support fruiting and new growth, especially on younger trees that are still building their framework.
