Growing Zones
Red Nancy Lamium (Lamium maculatum ‘Red Nancy’) brightens shaded gardens with its scalloped, silver-green leaves and clusters of rose-red to red-purple blooms. This low-growing perennial groundcover adds texture and gentle color from late spring through early summer, with scattered blooms continuing into fall. Reaching about 6 to 8 inches in height, its spreading habit quickly covers bare ground and weaves through woodland plantings or shaded borders. Its foliage and long-lasting flowers make it a superior choice over other shade plants, adding dimension and softness to quiet corners or container arrangements.
Beyond its attractive appearance, Red Nancy Lamium resists deer and rabbits and tolerates dry shade once established. Native to parts of Europe and North Africa, it adapts well to a variety of conditions and thrives in dappled light or full shade. Its semi-evergreen foliage remains interesting through much of the year, and it grows effortlessly in hanging baskets, window boxes, or on slopes. The low-maintenance nature of this plant makes it perfect for mass plantings, edging walkways, or creating lush underplantings below shrubs and trees.
Red Nancy Lamium Care
Plant Red Nancy Lamium in well-drained, humus-rich soil, preferably in partial to full shade, though it can handle a few hours of sun. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish, then reduce watering once the plant matures. While it prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils, it tolerates a range of pH levels as long as the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. A light mulch of organic matter helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilizing is generally unnecessary, though a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can promote new growth if desired.
Light pruning in midsummer can rejuvenate leggy growth and encourage fresh foliage. Cutting back old flowers and thinning dense patches helps maintain a neat appearance and stimulates more blooms. In colder climates, adding a thick layer of mulch around the base in late fall protects the roots during winter. Container-grown plants may need occasional division or repotting to prevent overcrowding.
Red Nancy Lamium Spacing
For mass plantings or groundcover effects, space plants about 12 to 16 inches apart to allow room for spreading. When using as an accent or in mixed containers, consider a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide to accommodate its expanding root system. Adequate spacing and container size ensure healthy growth, lush coverage, and a pleasing display in any shaded garden setting.
