If you've spent any time in the hosta world, you know that "red" has always been more of a suggestion than a reality — a flush of burgundy in spring that quietly fades to green by July. Red Ninja changes that. The leaves are a genuine deep burgundy-red with dark green margins, and they stay that way through summer. It's the breakthrough hosta collectors and shade gardeners have been waiting for, and it's finally here.
It's not a big plant — 14 inches tall and about 2 feet wide — which actually makes it more useful. It tucks into the front of a border, fits beautifully in a container on a shaded porch, and doesn't bully its neighbors. Come late summer, purple flowers push up above the foliage right when everything else in the garden is starting to look tired. The timing alone is worth something.
Red Ninja™ Hosta Care
The one thing Red Ninja asks for is a little morning sun — just a couple of hours of gentle direct light to keep that red color where you want it. Plant it in deep shade and it'll sulk toward green. Give it dappled light or a morning east exposure and it rewards you all season. Beyond that, treat it like any good hosta: moist well-drained soil, consistent water through the heat of summer, and a light feed in spring. It goes dormant in winter and comes back on its own every year without any fuss.
Red Ninja™ Hosta Spacing
Give each plant about 2 feet of space and let it settle in — hostas always look better in their second and third year once the clump fills out. It's a natural for containers too; a 12–14 inch pot on a shaded balcony or patio gives it everything it needs.
For combinations, lean into the contrast. Lime-green or gold foliage makes that burgundy-red pop harder than almost anything else — chartreuse heuchera, lady's mantle, or a bright gold hosta nearby will make Red Ninja look almost unreal. In a pot, pair it with a lime sweet potato vine spilling over the edge and people will assume you're a much better gardener than you are.
