The Reversa Alocasia, also known as the Reverse Alocasia, African Mask and Elephant Ears, is a unique houseplant. Its arrowhead-shaped leaves are silver with deep, dark-green veins. Though this plant is known for being on the higher end of the maintenance scale, it can thrive indoors with proper care. These plants rarely grow taller than 19 inches indoors, so they’re a great choice for areas with limited space! This plant also likes to be a bit root bound, so you’ll seldom need to re-pot!
Best Locations For Growing Reversa Alocasia
This is a great plant for any room, but it is toxic to pets and humans, so keep it out of reach of children and furry friends. Being a subtropical plant, Alocasia loves humidity: you may consider keeping it in a bathroom or near a humidifier.
Reversa Alocasia Sunlight Requirements
The Reversa Alocasia is a pretty adaptable plant, and can handle low to bright indirect light. However, it will thrive and grow more quickly in a location with bright indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight will burn its leaves, so if placing it near a south-facing window, make sure to keep it a few feet away.
Reversa Alocasia Care
As a subtropical plant, the Reversa Alocasia prefers warmer temperatures and humidity. It is quite sensitive to cold temperatures (50 degrees and below), so avoid placing it near an exterior door, drafty window or air-conditioning vent. If you live in a drier climate like the desert, consider placing your Alocasia near a humidifier or pebble tray. You can also place it in the shower to give it regular humidity!
In the wild, this plant grows between large boulders, so it thrives with well-draining soil that aerates fairly well. You can make this at home by mixing perlite, coarse potting sand and peat at a 1:1:1 ratio. You can also use a well-draining aroid mix from the store.
Watering Reversa Alocasia
Only water your Reversa Alocasia when the top two inches of soil are dry. This plant has medium water requirements, meaning it needs evenly consistent moisture. Cut back on watering in colder months if the plant is not actively growing.
Feeding Reversa Alocasia
Reversa Alocasia benefits from regular feedings. Try a diluted (1/2 or 1/4 strength) complete liquid fertilizer, fish/seaweed emulsion or slow-release fertilizer. Feed once a month in the spring and summer.
