Growing Zones
Hailing from the Southeastern United States, the River Birch Select is a stunning tree and ideal for wet soil. Also called Betula nigra ‘Select’, its peeling bark and glossy green foliage provide year-round interest. A hardy birch, the River Birch Select grows to around 30 to 40 feet tall and even develops lovely fall color as the leaves turn from green to orange and red before dropping.
The River Birch Select is fast growing and can tolerate the heat. As one of the hardier birches, it is suitable for growing in USDA zones 3 to 9. It can tolerate both wet soils and dry spells. River Birch Select is commonly grown and appreciated as a specimen tree; however, it can also be planted for shade and in a grouping.
River Birch Select Care
The River Birch Select grows well in both full sun and partial shade. It prefers a moist, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil and will need frequent watering until established. Feed once a year in early spring with a tree-specific, slow-release fertilizer. A layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree will help prevent moisture loss and keep weeds at bay. With a potential height of 40 plus feet, planting near any overhangs or power lines should be avoided
Minimal pruning is required. If necessary, any crossing, rubbing or damaged material can be pruned out in late summer or the fall.
River Birch Select Spacing
When mature, the River Birch Select can reach a size of 30 to 40 feet tall and 20 to 25 feet across. To plant a small grove, space trees approximately 15 feet apart.
