Want to light up a deep dark shady spot in your landscape? Hang a basket of Rockapulco Coral Reef Impatiens or better yet, mass out a ring around that shade tree for a beautiful coral pink/orange glow. Now you have the perfect plant for that hard to plant spot. Deep coral pink to orange fully double blossoms perch over dark green lush foliage creating the perfect complement to dark red or chartreuse green foliage plants.
Native to East Africa from Kenya to Mozambique, Zones 10a through 11b, this tropical perennial thrives in that hot humid climate, but you can grow them in Zones 3-9 in late spring and early summer as an annual. Set them out well after the danger of the last frost, and they will bloom until the first frost for you. These plants also make wonderful edgings and borders in shaded areas, finally giving you the color you crave in these hard to plant areas.
Rockapulco® Coral Reef Impatiens Care
Once you give them the proper location, medium to moist well draining soil with a pH average of 5.8 to 6.2, and a regular watering and feeding schedule, impatiens will take it from there and perform all season long with little to no additional intervention from you. They are prone to aphids, thrips and fungus gnats so care is needed to watch that soil does not become overly saturated, and that there is proper air circulation to reduce these possibilities. Treating them with insecticidal soap should these pests appear will help control them.
Deadheading is not necessary, but you may want to clean the spent blossoms up from the soil as these are larger double blooms and good housekeeping will help reduce soil diseases. Prune to help shape any plants that get inordinately large or to promote branching and more blossoms. There are 7 more colors in the Rockapulco line up and these make a great companion to Coral Reef and can create very impressive displays.
Rockapulco® Coral Reef Impatiens Spacing
Spacing is crucial with any annual that grows in shaded hot humid areas as air circulation is key to plant health and disease avoidance. Growing up to 20 inches tall and 24 inches wide, give them spacing of 10 to 12 inches apart for optimal performance. Pairing these beautiful double impatiens with ipomoea, solenostemon, sedum and euphorbia will create a beautiful full shade display all summer long.
