The variegated Roman Candle Podocarpus features unique, nearly white foliage on new growth. The lightly colored foliage begins to appear each spring for a soft effect on a tough plant. That is, it stands up to heat. It is far from tough for the gardener, however, and is an easy-care and unique plant. Podocarpus shrubs are favorites for creating evergreen hedges for year-round color and privacy or screening.
Roman Candle Podocarpus creates a hedge with unique and variegated color. Each shrub can grow to about 10 to 15 feet high and 3 to 4 feet wide, so even a single shrub makes a pretty screen all year long. It grows at a moderate rate. Thriving in zones 7 through 10, this hardy evergreen can handle some heat. It is cold hardy to about 0 to 10 degrees in winter. Deer tend to ignore Podocarpus and Roman Candle should resist most pests and diseases.
Roman Candle Podocarpus Care
Grow Roman Candle Podocarpus is full sun or part shade in well-draining soil. Water the ground well before planting and give it average but regular watering as it grows. Your Podocarpus needs little pruning unless you want to shape it for a hedge. Prune in early spring before you begin to see the light green new foliage appear. Fertilize the shrub once a year in early spring.
Roman Candle Podocarpus Spacing
Roman Candle Podocarpus is a perfect plant to create privacy in your landscape. For a longer hedge, place the plants about 3 to 4 feet apart from center to center.
