Royal Cape® Plumbago is the rare shrub that offers true blue flower clusters for months, not weeks. Royal Cape® Plumbago keeps a loose, spilling shape that can work as a shrub, a climber, or a cascading container plant depending on how you place it. Plumbago auriculata 'Monott' carries light green foliage that stays evergreen where winters are mild. Our container designers often use it for reliable color on a sunny patio.
In Zones 9–11 it can live outdoors year-round as a groundcover, bank cover, or informal screen. The long stems can be guided along a low fence line, or allowed to drape over a wall to hide hard edges. Blooms form on new growth, so it rewards you for a simple seasonal cutback rather than constant trimming. It also handles coastal exposure and dry spells once established, making it useful around pool decks and gravel-heavy beds.
Royal Cape® Plumbago Care
Plant in full sun for the strongest flowering, with light afternoon shade acceptable in hotter microclimates. Give it light, well-drained soil that leans slightly acidic, although it adapts to many garden soils if drainage is good. If you’re planting on a slope, tuck it into a shallow terrace or pocket so water can soak in instead of running off.
Water deeply and regularly through the first growing season, then let the top 2 inches of soil dry before the next soak. Feed with a general-purpose fertilizer in early spring before new growth starts, and repeat lightly in late summer only if growth has stalled in containers. In colder zones, treat it as a warm-season patio plant and bring containers indoors before frost.
Remove spent flower clusters and any winter-browned tips to keep the plant clean and blooming. Do your main pruning in late winter to early spring, cutting back by up to a third to stimulate fresh flowering stems. If you’re training it as a shrubby climber, tie new shoots to a trellis since it won’t attach on its own.
Royal Cape® Plumbago Spacing
Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart to let the natural 6–8 foot spread become a full mound without crowding. For containers, start with a 16–20 inch pot with drainage so the root zone stays evenly moist between waterings. Grow it in the landscape with lavender and rosemary for a sun-loving, waterwise mix that looks sharp year-round. In containers, combine it with mandevilla for height and petunias to trail, letting the plumbago fill the middle with blue.
