The Rugosa Peperomia is a darling plant with thick, fleshy leaves. The cupped leaves are slightly indented along the veins, providing a subtle texture. The leaves are a deep maroon with bright green margins, while the underside and stems are red. Peperomias have an upright growth habit with densely packed stems, creating a full, bushy form.
Best Locations For Growing Rugosa Peperomia
Select a sunny spot for the Rugosa Peperomia. This Peperomia likes increased moisture and will flourish in a steamy bathroom or humid sunroom. Increased moisture in the air is best, but the plant can live in average humidity and will look charming on an end table or desk. Use a pebble tray to make any location the perfect spot for the plant. Peperomias are safe and non-toxic, so this is an excellent plant for your home if you have young kids or pets.
Rugosa Peperomia Sunlight Requirements
The Rugosa Peperomia is adaptable and can live in medium to bright sunlight. A spot near an east- or west-facing window will provide adequate light. Plants in low light will become leggy, so move the plant to a sunnier spot if you notice straggly growth. The intense rays of direct sunlight can burn the delicate leaves.
Rugosa Peperomia Care
Prune leggy growth or pinch back new growth to encourage a bushy form. Peperomias are slow growers and prefer to be rootbound, so don’t rush to repot. The Rugosa Peperomia can stay in the same pot for years; you’ll know it’s time to repot when the roots grow through the drainage holes in the pot. Repot into a new container that measures one to two inches larger. The ideal soil will be loose, well-drained and acidic in pH.
Watering Rugosa Peperomia
The Rugosa Peperomia has medium water needs. Peperomias store water in their thick leaves and prefer to dry out somewhat before getting water. Wait until the top couple inches of potting soil are dry before giving the plant water. Saturate the soil when watering and remove excess from the cover pot or tray.
A warm, humid environment is ideal. The plant can live in average humidity, but it will settle in better grouped with several plants, away from drafty locations. Dry, brown patches along the edges indicate the air is too dry for the plant.
Feeding Rugosa Peperomia
Routine feedings help the plant grow, but the Rugosa Peperomia is not a heavy feeder. Fertilize monthly during the growing season using a balanced plant food. A water-soluble product is easy to use and reduces the risk of fertilizer burn. Do not feed your Rugosa Peperomia during the fall and winter.
