Sage is a fragrant and useful herb to grow in the garden. It's also attractive as a container or garden bed plant, with soft green leaves that look as good as they taste. The strong flavor adds interest to dishes from marinades to breads and pastries. It's also an easy plant to grow, either year-round in zones 6 through 8 or as a kitchen garden or container annual. The shrubs usually grow about 3 feet tall and can develop purple flowers late in the season that attract bees.
Sage is easy to harvest; you can clip off leaves within a week or so of planting. Harvest all season as needed and cut long stems – about 6 inches or more—for drying.
Sage Plant Care
Plant sage in the cool days of spring but after danger of frost has passed. The plants grow best in full sun and average but loose soil. This helps water drain and avoids soggy roots. Space sage plants about a foot apart. Prune lightly in spring to remove old growth, which will promote new leaves. Sage plants thrive for 3 to 5 years, but you can divide a large plant after 2 to 3 years.
Growing Sage Plants
As long as sage has full sun, soil that drains well and consistent but moderate watering, the plant should thrive and continue producing. In colder areas, sage plants in containers can come indoors for winter. The plants will need lots of sun while indoors.
Sage is a versatile herb that looks pretty and smells lovely in a patio container while adding to fresh seasoning choices in the kitchen. A container-grown sage should not be overwatered and can go inside and outside based on temperatures during seasons.
Watering Sage Plants
Sage plants do not require much water once they are established. Water sage only after checking to see if the top inch or so of soil or potting mix is dry.
Feeding Sage Plants
Adding organic compost at planting time feeds sage for its first few weeks to a month. You can apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer for edibles as needed when watering after that.
