Feature
Dark green leaves and fragrant blooms are the standout features of the Sambac Jasmine, also known as Cestrum nocturnum and Arabian jasmine. This plant has a reaching, vining form but can be maintained as a bushy shrub. Glossy green leaves grow in pairs along the stems. Waxy flowers bloom in clusters during the summer, although the plant can bloom several times throughout the year. The flowers open in the evening and typically fade by morning, but the plant sets numerous flowers during a bloom cycle. The one-inch-wide blooms emerge as pure white and transition to light pink. Mature Sambac Jasmine plants can grow up to 10 feet long.
Best Locations For Growing Sambac Jasmine
The lovely vines of the Sambac Jasmine make a stunning addition to most areas of a home. Increased sunlight and space are the more significant factors to consider when finding a home for this plant. The glossy leaves and flowers look lovely in a living room, or would create a stunning meeting background in a home office if trained on a trellis. Consider using a pebble tray or humidifier to help the plant feel at home. Sambac Jasmine is safe and non-toxic.
Sambac Jasmine Sunlight Requirements
Plenty of sunlight is needed to keep the Sambac Jasmine growing and blooming. Choose a location set back from a south-facing window or close to a west-facing window. Increased sunlight encourages growth and is mandatory for the plant to set flowers.
Sambac Jasmine Care
Repot the Sambac Jasmine when the plant fits tightly in its pot. The plant will likely need an upgrade to a new container with fresh potting soil every one to two years. Use loose, rich soil that promotes drainage. Give the Sambac Jasmine a moss pole or trellis, and the plant will demonstrate its climbing ability. Prune the stems to maintain the size or encourage branching, creating a fuller form.
Watering Sambac Jasmine
This tropical plant has average water needs, so expect to water the plant every 7 to 10 days. Water when the top few inches of potting soil are dry. Feel the soil to determine the best time to water. The plant may need water more often during the spring and summer when it is growing and blooming. Plan to water less frequently in the fall and winter.
Sambac Jasmine can live in average humidity but flourishes in above-average humidity. This tropical plant likes extra moisture in the air, especially in the spring and summer, when high humidity encourages the plant to bloom more prolifically.
Feeding Sambac Jasmine
Fertilize the Sambac Jasmine with a balanced, water-soluble plant food. Feed the plant every few weeks when it is actively growing. Stop fertilizing the plant if it becomes dormant and stops growing in the fall and winter.
