There are few flowering shrubs that are as iconic as the lilac, which rivals the rose alone for its color and fragrance. Scentura Pura Lilac is a hybrid lilac bred to resist the diseases that can plague lilacs and still deliver on the abundant blooms, beautiful light purple color and that scent that say springtime is here to many gardeners throughout the country. Once known as a shrub primarily for Northern gardeners due to its long chilling hour requirement, this new hybrid will make Southern gardeners rejoice as it is hardy from Zone 2 to 8, from the tip of Maine down to the Panhandle of Florida and westward. All regions of the United States except for the very hottest climates can now enjoy the beautiful fragrance and color.

Native to Europe and Eastern Asia, Syringa hyacinthiflora has been widely cultivated throughout the world as a naturalized shrub that graces many landscapes. It is a woody shrub, a veritable tree at times. It is a part of the olive family and is the most fragrant variety of lilacs the world over. Scentura Pura is a deciduous shrub, growing up to 6 foot tall and wide, and retains every bit of the charm of its parent plant, and is sized perfectly for today’s home landscapes and urban developments. It blooms 7 to 10 days earlier than the common lilac and has none of its troublesome plant disease tendencies. It will not produce viable seed so will not take over your landscape with myriads of suckers to be dealt with. A win-win for home gardeners everywhere!

Scentara Pura® Lilac Care

Choose your planting site for your lilac carefully, and aim for at least 6 hours of sun which will promote lots of blooms. A neutral to alkaline soil is needed, as well as a well draining soil. Lilacs grow naturally in native habitats on woodland edges where the sun meets the shadow, and in the scrub meadowlands in bright sunlight. Both habitats have well draining soil in common as lilacs will not tolerate soggy soil.

Dig your hole twice the size of the root ball and amend your native soil with perlite, peat moss or vermiculite if it is heavy and compact. Lilacs typically do not need fertilizer so top dress with some well composted organic material at the most and it will do just fine. Water only when naturally occurring rain is less than 1 inch per week. Other than pruning out any dead or damaged branches, you should not need to prune your lilac. Deadheading is not needed, but if you want to remove dried bracts or any seed clusters that may be produced, do so right after the flower is spent as lilacs only bloom on old wood the following spring. Most regions will not need winter mulching as the plant needs adequate chill time to produce flowers the next spring.
