Shadblow Serviceberry, also known as Amelanchier lamarckii F.G. Schroed, Juneberry Tree, Snowy Mespilus, and Apple Serviceberry, is a classy deciduous tree that produces color and charm all-year long. In spring, the first chromatic act begins. On the sunlit stage, the back-up singers, or rosy-pink leaves unfurl. Soon, after, the pearl-colored flowers, or star vocalists, gingerly step onto the stage and the concert begins. Finally, the wash of white takes its bows and exits. The back-up chorus, now taking their turn to shine, steps closer to the audience, and as summer commences and they start to entertain, the foliage turns from pink to chartreuse and then during the autumn, from chartreuse to scarlet. Finally, taking their leave in late fall, the troupe steps off stage to rest before doing it all over again. Shadberry Serviceberry, an elegant show requiring little to no attention, is the perfect addition for any person new to gardening who desires elegance and style.

Best Locations For Growing Shadblow Serviceberry

This tree will thrive in any location of your yard that has exposure full to part shade exposure and is hardy in zones 4 to 9. Additionally, since this shrub is normally not toxic to people or pets, you don’t need to worry about little hands or paws touching it.

Shadblow Serviceberry Sunlight Requirements

Planted outside a south-facing, east-facing, or west-facing wall will provide adequate amounts of energy for this deciduous shrub to optimally grow.

Shadblow Serviceberry Care

Shadblow Serviceberry, a flowering tree, prefers moist, acidic to neutral, well-drained soil. We recommend using a typical potting soil amended with peat moss and perlite/pumice for drainage. This deciduous shrub rarely requires pruning. It also produces variegated foliage and faintly perfumed, showy white blooms that are followed by crimson berries birds can eat.

Watering Shadblow Serviceberry

Shadblow Serviceberry requires minimum watering, primarily only in its first year of growth until it becomes established.

Feeding Shadblow Serviceberry

This tree typically does not need to be fertilized. If you choose to do so, however, use a balanced fertilizer and feed this shrub one time per year, either before the flowers form in the spring or after the foliage dies in the autumn.
