Are you in search of a joyously, ruffle-leaved foliage perennial? Search no further! With its medium bluish-green and creamy white edged foliage, this perennial will be a great contrast to neighboring plants that are either bright or bold in color. This easy to maintain plant will have you in awe of how beautiful the foliage truly is for how little work needs to be poured into its care! Growing into an incredible size of up to 22” tall and about 48” wide, this will be a great space filler for any empty spot within your shady landscape.

Not only will this bring a unique foliage interest to the shady areas of your landscape with its beautiful leaves, it will also produce crisp white flowers mid-summer. If you’re in search of a plant addition that will attract hummingbirds and butterflies, this is it! Due to the size of the leaves, spent foliage is hidden beneath the new growth-- allowing the visual appeal to continue without extra care. Use this in container gardening, general landscape or mass planting.

Shadowland® Hope Springs Eternal Hosta Care

This is hardy to zones 3-9 and will withstand many extreme weather elements as long as it is planted in partial or full shade. Plant this in well-draining soil. Average quality soil is fine, however organically amending the soil will produce the best foliage. If planting in heavy clay, amend the soil with sandy loam to allow the roots plenty of breathing space. Neutral or slightly acidic pH soil is recommended. Mulching can assist in keeping the soil moist, however you’ll need to watch for holes on the leaves. If there are holes on the leaves, rake back any mulch you have near the plant and apply slug bait or traps as they are the culprit for the holes. In cooler climates it is best to apply finely shredded organic materials, such as fallen leaves, to protect the crown of the plant.

Pruning needs are simple! In the fall, cut the foliage down to about 1” from the crown of the plant. This will prevent insect issues from appearing due to the dying foliage.

Shadowland® Hope Springs Eternal Hosta Spacing

Due to the sheer size of this perennial, it is best to space all neighboring plants at a minimum 45” on center. When container gardening, be sure to provide plenty of space between the root ball and neighboring plants by keeping a minimum distance of 36” on center. Keep an eye on the roots to ensure overcrowding does not occur.
