Feature
Dracaena masoniana, previously Sanseveria masoniana, is not your everyday snake plant. Shark Fin has highly patterned, broad leaves and stays relatively petite. Snake plants are the perfect first plants for an aspiring houseplant gardener. They are forgiving when waterings are missed and do not mind growing in rooms without natural lighting like in an office or dorm room.
Best Locations For Growing Shark Fin Snake Plant
Practically any room of the house is great for growing snake plants. When this plant is small it can be a great accent for a side table, desk, or bookshelf. Reaching a mature height of around 2 feet, they can also be displayed as floor plants on decorative stands, tolerating the lighting in any corner of a room. Keep pets and children away from these plants as they are considered toxic if eaten and may have sharp leaf margins and tips.
Shark Fin Snake Plant Sunlight Requirements
This resilient plant adapts well to a range of lighting conditions, from bright to low natural light. However, keep in mind that plants in low to medium light will grow more slowly and require less frequent watering compared to those in brighter conditions. If placed in direct sunlight, such as near a south-facing window, your Shark Fin snake plant should be gradually acclimated to avoid shock.
Shark Fin Snake Plant Care
For optimal growth, plant your snake plant in a well-draining potting mix that retains slight moisture. An all-purpose indoor potting mix generally suffices, but incorporating extra perlite, pumice, or horticultural grit ensures excellent drainage and prevents soil compaction. Plastic pots with proper drainage are effective for moisture conservation, while terra cotta or ceramic containers encourage the potting mix to dry between waterings, reducing the risk of overwatering.
Watering Shark Fin Snake Plant
Snake plants prefer soil that is somewhat dry, but will grow faster when kept moderately moist. Check the soil every 7-10 days to ensure at least 50% has dried out. Plants in low light may require less frequent watering, potentially going up to two weeks between sessions. Always empty any saucers or cache pots of excess water, as the roots do not tolerate standing water.
Feeding Shark Fin Snake Plant
While snake plants generally require little fertilization, they can benefit from light feeding once or twice during their active growing season. From March to August, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer at half the manufacturer’s recommended dosage, ideally at the beginning of spring and again at the start of summer.
