Feature
Pothos collectors will want to check out this unique yet easy-to-grow variety. Skeleton Pothos may resemble any other trailing plant in its youth, but as the leaves mature, they transform into a distinctive shape reminiscent of an old-fashioned skeleton key. The variegation fades as the leaves develop their shape and become solid green. Epipremnum pinnatum can grow up to 6 feet in length and looks stunning when trained on a moss pole or trellis system.
Best Locations For Growing Skeleton Key Pothos
Pothos make excellent tabletop plants when young and striking floor plants when trained on a support, allowing them to reach their maximum length. While average indoor humidity is sufficient, more humid environments, such as bathrooms and kitchens, are beneficial. It is important to keep curious pets and children away from this plant, as all parts are considered moderately toxic.
Skeleton Key Pothos Sunlight Requirements
Skeleton Key Pothos thrives in bright indirect light, which enhances its vibrant coloration. Although lower light levels are acceptable, they may result in elongated, lanky stems with sparse, small leaves. Rooms with east or west-facing windows are ideal, though a north-facing exposure can suffice if other options are unavailable.
Skeleton Key Pothos Care
Pothos grows best in an all-purpose indoor potting mix to allow adequate drainage. To improve drainage, consider adding perlite or pumice to the mix. Ensure that the planting container has ample drainage holes to prevent the plant from sitting in waterlogged soil.
Prune side shoots as needed to keep the plant to size. These cuttings can quickly root in a glass of water and can be potted as individual plants within weeks. Cuttings can be propagated year-round.
Watering Skeleton Key Pothos
During the spring and summer months, check the plant for watering once a week. Allow only the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out between waterings, and always empty any saucers or cache pots of excess water. As growth slows in the fall and winter, reduce the watering frequency to about once every 10 to 14 days, depending on the humidity and light levels.
Feeding Skeleton Key Pothos
Skeleton Key Pothos is a moderate feeder and benefits from regular fertilization during the spring and summer months. Opt for a balanced, water-soluble houseplant formulation, and apply once a month at the manufacturer’s recommended dosage. No feeding is necessary during the fall and winter months.
