Growing Zones
Snowflake Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens ‘Snowflake’) dazzles the garden each spring with large, snowy-white flower clusters that blanket its narrow, evergreen leaves. Compact and low-growing, this perennial forms a tidy mound, about 8 to 10 inches tall, making it perfect for edging walkways or filling small gaps in rock gardens. Its bright white blooms bring crisp freshness to beds and borders, standing out especially well against darker foliage. Unlike many early-season flowers, Snowflake Candytuft continues to look neat after blooming, and its drought tolerance and minimal care requirements set it apart from fussier spring plants.
Native to southern Europe, Snowflake Candytuft adapts well to sunny or partially shaded spots. Its evergreen leaves mean there is year-round color even when the flowers are not in bloom. This plant resists deer and rabbits, thrives in poor to average soil, and requires little maintenance once established. Use Snowflake Candytuft for mass plantings, as a groundcover, edging plant, or in containers to add lasting beauty to cottage gardens, rock gardens, and modern landscapes alike.
Snowflake Candytuft Care
Plant Snowflake Candytuft in full sun to partial shade, in well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help it settle in, then reduce watering as it becomes more drought-tolerant. A light, balanced fertilizer in early spring can help stimulate fresh growth and abundant blooms. Consider adding mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Ensure good air circulation to discourage fungal problems, and avoid placing it in areas where water pools after rain.
After flowering, shear back the plant by about one-third to maintain a neat shape and encourage fresh foliage. This simple trimming helps keep it looking tidy, promoting a more compact growth habit and potentially extending its lifespan. If the plant becomes too large or blooms decline, consider dividing it every few years. In colder climates, containers can be brought into a sheltered area to protect roots from extreme winter temperatures.
Snowflake Candytuft Spacing
For a continuous groundcover or edging effect, space Snowflake Candytuft plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. If using as part of a mass planting, keep this spacing consistent to create a uniform, lush carpet of foliage and flowers. When planting in containers, choose a pot about 10 to 12 inches wide to give the roots room to spread and the plant room to develop its soft, mounded form.
