Soursop (Guanábana) delivers tropical flavor and lush, glossy foliage in one striking fruit tree. Its custard-textured, aromatic fruit tastes like pineapple, mango, and banana blended into a naturally sweet sorbet—perfect for smoothies, desserts, and fresh eating.
Native to the Caribbean and tropical Americas, soursop pairs showy, prickly green fruit with thick, leathery leaves and creamy yellow blooms. Grown in the ground in warm climates or in a large pot you can roll indoors for winter, it’s a conversation piece that also feeds you.
Soursop (Guanábana) Care
Give soursop full sun and fast-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH ~5.5–6.5). Keep soil evenly moist—deep, regular watering during heat, then allow the top inch to dry between waterings in containers. Feed in spring and midsummer with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for fruiting trees, and top-dress with compost to support steady growth.
Protect from chill and wind; soursop performs best where temperatures stay above 50°F (USDA Zones 10–11). In cooler regions, grow in a 20–30+ gallon container and overwinter in a bright, warm spot. Prune lightly after harvest to remove dead or crossing wood and to keep the canopy open; tip-pruning encourages lateral branches and easier picking.
Flowers are naturally beetle-pollinated—hand pollination in the evening can boost fruit set.
Soursop (Guanábana) Spacing
In-ground trees reach about 15–25 ft tall and 12–20 ft wide. Space 12–15 ft apart for a productive mini-orchard, or 18–20 ft for individual showpieces with fuller canopies. For hedgerow effects in frost-free zones, plant on 10–12 ft centers and keep trimmed to 10–12 ft tall. In containers, choose a sturdy pot with excellent drainage; place planters 4–6 ft apart to leave room for foliage and airflow.
