Rhododendrons are one of the most beloved shrubs of the spring. With their broad evergreen leaves and large flowers ‘Southgate Divine’ rhododendron is the ideal shrub for your garden. It has pink buds opening to white flowers flecked with tiny spots of burgundy and as an added bonus, it is a dwarf variety!
‘Southgate Divine’ is winter hardy and summer heat tolerant as well as insect and disease resistant. And since it is flowering long before other plants in the garden, it is a great pollinator plant too, attracting bees and butterflies. Rhododendron flowers are in clusters, almost to the size of a softball so a standout in the garden.
Southgate Divine Rhododendron Care
This rhododendron is hardy from Zone 6a – 9 b. They like a slightly acidic soil so fertilizing with a slow release acid fertilizer such as Espoma Holly Tone is ideal. They thrive best in afternoon shade in a moist but well-draining soil. Water on a regular basis and 1-2 inches of mulch scattered at the base of the plant will ensure a happy plant. ‘Southgate Divine’ doesn’t need pruning except for a broken or crossed branch.
Southgate Divine Rhododendron Spacing
‘Southgate Divine’ is considered a dwarf rhododendron only growing 4 -5 ft. tall and wide. It is perfect for a hedge, privacy screening or as focal plant in the landscape. If planting ‘Southgate Divine’ as a hedge or screening, plant them a little closer together to give you ideal privacy.
