Space Age™ Black Hole™ Rex Begonia captivates with its show-stopping silver foliage framed by bold, black, jagged edges and striking green veining. The deep burgundy-to-black center creates a stunning contrast that draws the eye to each leaf. Occasionally, small coral-red flowers emerge, adding a touch of color amidst the dramatic foliage. With its compact, mounding form reaching 15–18 inches in both height and spread, this begonia is perfect for shaded containers, patios, and indoor spaces as a houseplant.

This heat-tolerant annual thrives in zones 10–12 and is well-suited for low-maintenance gardening. It resists deer and rabbits, making it a great choice for urban and rural gardens alike. Its foliage remains attractive from spring through frost, making it ideal for borders, shaded garden beds, or as an eye-catching filler in decorative planters. Native to tropical and subtropical regions, this rex begonia adds elegance and texture wherever it is planted.

Space Age™ Black Hole™ Rex Begonia Care

Plant in part to full shade, with 4 hours or less of direct sunlight daily. This begonia prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Water consistently, keeping the soil moist but not soggy, and allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Adding organic matter at planting time can improve drainage and nutrient content. Avoid overwatering, especially in containers, as excess moisture can lead to root rot. Feeding with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every two to four weeks encourages lush growth and healthy leaves.

To protect the plant during cooler months in containers, move it indoors before the first frost. When kept as a houseplant, place in bright, indirect light and maintain moderate humidity levels.

Prune lightly by removing faded or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s shape and encourage new growth. In early summer, pinching back the growing tips can result in a fuller, bushier habit. At the end of the growing season, trim back leggy stems to refresh the plant's appearance.

Space Age™ Black Hole™ Rex Begonia Spacing

Space each plant 15–18 inches apart in garden beds to allow adequate airflow and promote healthy growth. When planting in pots, choose a container at least 12 inches wide to accommodate the plant's mature size. For dramatic mass plantings or as a border accent, group the plant in threes or fives.

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
