Spicy Globe Basil or Ocimum basilicum is easy to grow and provides a distinctive, pungent flavor to foods. The compact growth habit makes this basil plant well suited to small gardens, window boxes, or containers. Upright stems feature densely packed leaves and create a mounded look. Its small leaves stand out in Italian cooking and can be used fresh or dried. Harvest the leaves at any time during the growing season.

Spicy Globe Basil Plant Care

Plant Spicy Globe Basil outdoors after there is no longer a chance of frost. Space plants 12 to 15 inches apart. This plant needs full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Flowers emerge in late summer, but you can pinch the flowers off to encourage more foliage growth.

Growing Spicy Globe Basil Plant

As with most herbs, Spicy Globe Basil leaves can be picked anytime. This plant naturally maintains a small size, and mature plants reach 12 to 15 inches tall and wide. Cold temperatures are a problem for this plant, which is commonly grown annually. Bring the Spicy Globe Basil Plant indoors in the fall to continue to grow as a houseplant.

The dense, leafy form makes this basil plant a wonderful addition to a garden with limited space or an excellent container plant. Use an 8- to 10-inch container with drainage.

Watering Spicy Globe Basil Plant

Water new plants and container plants daily. Established plants in the ground need deep watering when the top couple of inches of soil are dry.

Feeding Spicy Globe Basil Plant

A layer of organic mulch will support the plant and retain moisture. Use a balanced plant food every few weeks to boost growth.
