Known botanically as Vaccinium corymbosum 'NC4499', this blueberry bush produces interesting blue-green foliage and small white flowers, which later develop into delicious fruits. With a final height of 3 to 4 feet, the Splendid!™ Blue Highbush Blueberry is a versatile shrub.
The deciduous Splendid!™ Blue Highbush Blueberry forms a rounded habit and is winter hardy in zones 6 to 9. It will develop berries on its own but planting alongside another Highbush variety will ensure a bumper crop. Splendid!™ is ideal for mass plantings and forming a low hedge. It can also be grown as a specimen in a border.
Splendid!™ Blue Highbush Blueberry Care
Full sun is needed for the Splendid!™ Blue Highbush Blueberry to thrive and develop ripe berries. It prefers an acidic substrate that is fertile and free draining. Water well after planting, and keep the soil moist during the spring and summer. To give it a boost, you can apply an ericaceous-specific fertilizer in early spring. Mulching annually with organic matter will help conserve moisture over the hotter months.
No pruning is required for the first 4 to 6 years. From then on, you can remove some of the oldest wood to encourage new growth.
