Growing Zones
Create a stately hedge and add year-round color and texture to a yard or outdoor space with the Spreading English Yew. Also known as Taxus baccata 'Repandens', this shrub has a low form and spreads, creating a carpet of greenery. The evergreen needles are a vibrant shade of green and maintain their color throughout the winter.
Yew shrubs make an excellent hedge. The Spreading English Yew has a low form, so it will not provide privacy, but it can help define a space. Plant it around a patio or porch to create a green border. This plant is low maintenance and responds well to pruning. Grow Spreading English Yew as a perennial in zones 5 through 9.
Spreading English Yew Care
Plant this shrub in full sun to partial shade. Yews can live in low light, but the growth may become leggy, so select a spot that receives at least a few hours of direct sunlight. The soil should be rich, well-drained, and have a slightly alkaline pH. New plants need consistent water, while established plants only need a drink during a dry period.
Feed Spreading English Yew in the spring by applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the shrub, or use a slow-release, nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Yew has a lovely natural form but maintains a shape when pruned, allowing for a manicured look.
Spreading English Yew Spacing
Spreading English Yew is an evergreen with woody stems and a spreading growth habit. Mature plants reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. Yew is a slow grower, so space plants 10 feet apart when creating a hedge or continuous planting.
