This charmer deserves a front row planting in the flowerbed, or tucks nicely a pot as blue clouds of filler. Only about 12 inches tall and wide, Summer Cloud delphinium’s deep blue flowers have a white blotch in the middle that attracts the eye. Lacy green leaves add to the perennial’s beauty.
Summer Cloud delphinium (D. grandiflorum) is rabbit and deer resistant. An upright, long-season bloomer, it attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Use in a pot, as a dwarf cut flower, an edging plant or planted in a mass.
Summer Cloud Dwarf Delphinium Care
Grow in full sun (6+ hours) or part sun (4 to 6 hours). Delphinium is a short-lived perennial that does best in cooler climates. It requires rich, well-drained soil. Some gardeners plant delphinium in a slight mound in the flowerbed to ensure good drainage.
Delphiniums are heavy feeders, so fertilize regularly, according to label directions. Water during hot dry spells. Deadheading – removing spent flowers – encourages repeat blooms. At the end of the season, cut back to the ground.
Summer Cloud Dwarf Delphinium Spacing
Space 12 inches apart when planting in the ground. In a pot, use Summer Cloud dwarf delphinium as a beautiful filler.
