Summer Heat Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria hybrid 'Tessumheat') brings a fiery impact to gardens with big, bright red flowers set off by a bold yellow throat. Tall stems rise 36–42 inches, showing off clusters of brilliant blooms, while lush green foliage anchors the colorful display. Expect these impressive flowers to shine from midsummer well into the fall, delivering color when many plants begin to fade. These flowers bring drama to mixed borders and container plantings with little effort.
This selection emerges a bit later in spring than other perennials, then quickly grows to its full height. Originally hailing from the Andes of South America, Peruvian Lilies adapt well to sunny, moderately moist sites in your yard. Their upright habit and tall, narrow leaves create a striking vertical accent in the landscape, especially planted in groups. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds flock to these bold, nectar-rich blooms, while deer show little interest, making them a low-maintenance option. The bright red petals with a distinct yellow center also provide excellent, long-lasting cut flowers for fresh arrangements.
Summer Heat Peruvian Lily Care
Give Summer Heat a sunny location with 6 or more hours of light per day, though partial shade in warmer climates helps protect plants during scorching afternoons. Plant in well-drained, fertile soil, keeping it evenly moist—water regularly in dry spells to support continuous flowering. Applying a balanced fertilizer once or twice a year helps sustain robust blooms. In zones 6–9, you can leave this perennial in the ground over winter, though adding mulch around the root zone can provide extra protection in colder areas. If grown in containers, select a well-draining potting mix and monitor water levels to keep plants healthy and blooming.
Minimal pruning is required beyond removing spent flowers and any damaged foliage to encourage more blooms. Cutting flower stems at the base for bouquets triggers fresh growth, so don’t hesitate to gather them for indoor arrangements. For winter care, trim old stems back once the plant enters dormancy, especially if your region has consistent freezing temperatures. If grown in containers, you may move them to a sheltered location or lightly insulate the pot in very cold climates.
Summer Heat Peruvian Lily Spacing
Space plants 30 to 36 inches apart when using in a mass planting, providing plenty of room for the lush foliage and upright stems. If you plan to plant a single specimen in a container, use a pot around 12 to 16 inches in diameter and at least a foot deep. This ensures adequate root space for Summer Heat to deliver its dramatic, long-lasting show of bright red blooms.
