Gardeners already know impatiens as the go-to summer annual for shade. Meet SunPatiens impatiens, which readily adorn shady and sunny spots in the landscape. They are stunningly long-bloomers as filler in pots. SunPatiens Compact Purple flowers are larger than bedding impatiens (I. walleriana), on vigorous plants that reach up to 30 inches tall and 20-inches wide.
SunPatiens Compact Purple impatiens is not affected by impatiens downy mildew, a fungus disease that has taken a toll on traditional bedding impatiens. This plant has a mounded form that is loaded with long-lasting flowers. SunPatiens also does well as a mass planting in the landscape. SunPatiens Compact comes in 18 other colors.
SunPatiens® Compact Purple Impatiens Care
This heat-tolerant plant will wilt in full sun, but should bounce back once the sun passes. These do best with adequate moisture and fertilizer.
Deadheading (removing spent flowers) is not necessary. Although not grown as a cut flower, snip a branch or two for a long-lasting display in a vase.
SunPatiens® Compact Purple Impatiens Spacing
In a mixed container, use one SunPatiens Compact Purple impatiens. Or mix three plants in a 12-inch pot for a big show. In the ground, plant about 12 inches apart.
