Calibrachoa is a relative of the petunia, and offers many of the great qualities of the beloved petunia but in a more flowing and flowering growth habit. Plant Superbells Cardinal Calibrachoa in a container or the landscape and watch its 1- to 2-foot mound fill with abundant flowers in spring through fall. The flowers are sure to make you and passersby smile as they trail over container edges with bright reddish-orange color and yellow highlights.
You can fill containers with Superbells and never have to deadhead or prune the plant. As much as you love the color and shape of these calibrachoa blooms, hummingbirds will love them more. The flowers appear from planting time through summer and until a hard frost, depending on the growing zone. Although an annual plant in most areas of the country, warm and temperate areas in zones 10 and 11 might be able to grow this calibrachoa as a perennial plant or bring it indoors during the coolest months.
Superbells Cardinal Star Calibrachoa Care
Calibrachoas are known as easy-care plants for filling containers, filling in garden beds, or adding borders. Plant them in soil that drains well (that’s why they love pots) and give them average water. That’s pretty much it; the plants benefit from regular feeding with a well-balanced fertilizer that is water soluble. Just add it when watering. The South American native requires average water, but doesn’t like to sit in soggy soil, so only water the container when the top of the soil feels dry.
Although they can grow in part sun, Superbells Cardinal Star Calibrachoas will flower best if they receive about 4 to 6 hours of sun a day. With your calibrachoa in a pretty container, you can bring the plant indoors for winter and try to winter it over. If you like, you can encourage fuller growth and flowering by lightly pruning the calibrachoa when you plant it. But it’s not necessary. You also can prune the plant if it begins to open in the middle or not be as full in bloom. Typically, gardeners give mature plants a haircut in late summer or after wintering them over.
Superbells Cardinal Star Calibrachoa Spacing
Space your Superbells about 8 to 12 inches apart for best effect in garden beds or borders. In containers, place this stunner near the front of a large container or the center of a smaller one so the bright flowers can trail over the sides.
