Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea (Rhododendron x 'NCB195') energizes spring gardens with clusters of salmon-hued flowers and splashes of bright orange. Its generous height of up to 6 feet creates a dazzling display that draws curious eyes and thrilled pollinators. Each bloom exudes a pleasing scent that gently lingers on the warm spring air. In our experience, the floral show and reliable performance set this native hybrid apart from ordinary azaleas.
This shrub’s fragrant flowers appear in mid-spring, attracting butterflies and bees in search of nectar. Its upright growth habit makes it well suited as a bold accent or part of a flowering hedge. Developed from North American species by Dr. Jim Ballington at NCSU, it is hardy in zones 5 through 8 and adapts to various soils when planted with sufficient organic matter. The bright orange highlights spark a tropical vibe, while the salmon color harmonizes with companion plants in mixed beds.
Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea Care
Select a site with at least four hours of sun, although partial shade during the hottest part of the day often benefits leaf health. Aim for moist, acidic soil rich in organic content, and water consistently until roots establish. A spring application of an acid-forming fertilizer helps sustain healthy blooms, but avoid heavy feeding beyond early summer. Maintain even soil moisture without allowing roots to become waterlogged.
Minimal pruning is required, although removing spent flower clusters right after they fade can help encourage fresh growth. Consider a light trim to shape the plant, but avoid severe cutting back because Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea forms its buds on old wood. Container-grown azaleas need a well-draining potting mix and regular moisture checks, especially in hot weather. In colder regions, mulch around the base to insulate roots and protect the shrub from harsh winter winds.
Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea Spacing
Set shrubs three to six feet apart when planting in rows or mass groupings for a stunning spring display. If growing in a container, opt for a pot at least 18 inches wide and deep to allow ample room for root development.
