Sweet Reward™ Pink Azalea (Rhododendron x 'NCB193') greets spring with generous clusters of bright pink flowers and a warm, spicy fragrance. These pastel blooms fill the garden with color and aroma as they unfurl over glossy, green foliage. Reaching heights of around 3 to 6 feet, this eye-catching shrub quickly becomes a backyard centerpiece. Its native lineage helps it adapt smoothly to challenging conditions.
This deciduous azalea was developed by Dr. Jim Ballington at NCSU from North American species. Its robust growth supports globe-shaped clusters that beckon butterflies and hummingbirds. Many gardeners position Sweet Reward™ Pink Azalea near patios or pathways to fully appreciate its sweet scent. It performs reliably in zones 5 through 8 and shines in woodland gardens and container plantings.
Sweet Reward™ Pink Azalea Care
Provide slightly acidic, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter for healthy foliage and abundant blooms. A spot receiving full sun to partial shade is ideal, with afternoon shade recommended in hotter regions. Steady moisture is beneficial, but avoid waterlogged soil to reduce root problems. A light dose of acidic fertilizer in early spring encourages vigorous growth.
Prune lightly after the floral display ends if shaping is desired, bearing in mind that buds form on old wood. Container-grown azaleas thrive in roomy pots containing a well-draining, acidic mix. In colder areas, mulch around the base to insulate the shallow roots from harsh temperatures. Winter protection, such as a windbreak or sheltered location, also helps preserve the plant’s health. Remove any damaged or crossing branches once new growth appears in spring.
Sweet Reward™ Pink Azalea Spacing
Leave three to four feet between plants when forming a border or mass planting so each shrub can reach its mature spread. A single specimen may need as much as six feet of space on all sides to show off its full shape. For container displays, opt for a pot at least16 inches wide to give roots ample room.
