The giant, 4-inch, double blooms of The Lady Gardener Rose will stop every guest in your garden in their tracks. The bright apricot petals are not only visually perfect, but the heady scent of cedar and vanilla makes this a unique rose to place near a deck, patio, or walkway. The Lady Gardener was introduced in 2013 and is named after Plant Heritage, a plant conservation organization in the United Kingdom.
The compact growth habit of The lady Gardener makes it perfect for adding to an established rose garden or growing in a container. The highly fragranced flowers are repeat blooming and attract all manner of beneficial pollinators through the summer. The glossy green foliage stays clean and is highly resistant to diseases and pests. The Lady Gardener is heat tolerant for USDA zones 5-11 and survives the winter with little supplemental protection or maintenance.
The Lady Gardener Rose Care
Plant the Lady Gardener in a full sun or part shade location that receives at least 6 hours of sun. Protection during the hottest part of the day will help the flowers last longer. Well-drained but moist soil is a necessity. Roses do not like wet leaves and respond well to a soaker hose or drip irrigation system that directs water to the root zone. Fertilize with a slow-release feed formulated for roses. A formula close to 1-4-2 NPK will encourage heavier blooming and strong root formation.
Pruning is easy with the Lady Gardener. Late in the winter, any dead, damaged, or diseased branches should be removed at the base. Cut out the oldest and less productive canes to encourage new stems for the following season. Cut back the overall height by up to a half if needed. Deadhead the faded blooms throughout the summer to keep the shrub tidy and encourage new flower formation. Fertilizing and heavy pruning should not be done past late summer to allow the rose to prepare for dormancy in the winter. Allowing the last flush of flowers to form hips and seeds will benefit any wildlife in your garden through the fall and winter months.
The Lady Gardener Spacing
The Lady Gardener reaches a mature height and spread of 3-4 feet. A spacing of 4 feet between plants will allow adequate air circulation around all parts of the shrub. Containers should have at least a 5-gallon capacity with a 12-inch diameter.
