This indeterminate tomato is a 1994 All American Selection award winner. This hybrid variety combines delicious old-fashioned flavor and high yield with superior disease resistance. It’s a favorite of gardeners across the country. The large round, smooth red tomatoes typically weigh between 8 and 12 ounces when ready for harvest. These tomatoes are perfect for slicing and adding to sandwiches. Big Beef Tomato was bred to be resistant to verticillium, fusarium race 1 and 2, stemphylium, tobacco mosaic virus, root-knot nematodes and Alternaria stem canker diseases.

If you decide to prune, it's really a very simple process. Look for the tomato "suckers," which grow in the "V" space between the main stem and the branches on your tomato plant.

Big Beef Tomato Plant Care

Lycopersicon lycopersicum ‘Big Beef’ will not tolerate frost and should not be transplanted outdoors until the danger of frost has passed. Harvest to 3 to 5-inch fruits after they turn fully red. They will also ripen off the vine at room temperature. Indeterminate tomato plants are vines, so staking is required to keep the fruit off the ground. Prune off suckers that form between the main stem and the branches. They will produce little fruit and steal energy from the plant. Also remove any branches that touch the ground.

Growing Big Beef Tomato Plants

Plant Big Beef Tomatoes in a full sun location in your vegetable garden. A single plant can grow between 5 and 7 feet tall with a 2 to 3-foot spread. Big Beef Tomatoes can be grown as an annual in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 11. Space individual plants 24 inches apart. Plant them deeply so that the first set of leaves is covered. This will encourage the growth of additional roots to help the plant take up nutrients from the soil.

Big Beef Tomatoes can be grown in a large container such as a half-barrel planter. The plant will act as a spiller if left unstaked. Plants grown in containers need more frequent watering because the soil dries out quicker.

Watering Big Beef Tomato Plants

Tomatoes need at least an inch of water a week. Try to avoid wetting the leaves when watering. Let the water soak into the soil to a depth of 5 or 6 inches.

Feeding Big Beef Tomato Plants

Tomatoes are heavy feeders and will need to be fertilized with a 4-6-8 blend organic fertilizer throughout the growing season as directed on the package.
