Tomatoberry is an indeterminate cherry type that grows great in a garden bed or a container. The perfectly shaped fruit may be small at 1 inch in diameter, but they are packed with intense tomatoey flavor. This cherry tomato is not just delicious eaten fresh but also added to cooked recipes. The vining plants are heavy producers of large clusters of 25-35 tomatoes to a stem and require very little maintenance from late June to the first frost. The small fruit store well at room temperature and can be frozen whole for enjoyment throughout the winter.
Tomatoberry Cherry Tomato Plant Care
Tomatoes prefer full sun and well-draining soil. Amend the soil with 1-2 inches of organic compost before planting and fertilize regularly during the growing season. Give cherry tomatoes plenty of room when planting in the garden or a raised bed. Space plants 2 feet apart on the center and include support from bamboo stakes or a cage for the vigorous growing stems. Plant tomatoes outside after nighttime temperatures are above 50 degrees F.
Growing Tomatoberry Cherry Tomato Plant
Tomatoberry produces ripe fruit 60 days after transplanting and keeps going until the first frost. This tomato reaches 4-8 feet and can be pruned regularly to keep it shorter. Cherry tomatoes grow well in containers for a deck or patio where they are easily accessible. Tomatoberry is both disease and crack resistant.
Plant Tomatoberry in a container that is at least 5 gallons in size and has a 12-inch diameter. Use a soil-based potting mix and ensure the container has adequate drainage holes.
Watering Tomatoberry Cherry Tomato Plant
Water tomatoes in the ground once a week with 1 inch of water. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses is the best way to efficiently get water to the roots while keeping the foliage dry. Tomatoes growing in a container will need to be checked daily for watering. Allow the top 2-3 inches to dry between watering sessions.
Feeding Tomatoberry Cherry Tomato Plant
Fertilize tomatoes through the growing season with a fertilizer containing 1-4-2 or similar NPK ratio. The high phosphorous will encourage heavy flower production and fruiting. Use a diluted liquid feed every two weeks until the fruit begins to form.
