Totally Tempted® Watermelon Wine™ Cuphea (Cuphea procumbens) features pink-red tubular flowers with purple centers that appear nonstop from early summer until frost. This compact grower reaches about a foot tall, offering a neat mound of lush foliage. Its bright color stands out among other annuals, attracting pollinators all season. It outperforms many typical bedding plants by providing a steady display without constant attention.

Its tidy habit includes arching stems that resist flopping. This variety, native to warm regions of the Americas, is known for good disease resistance and moderate drought tolerance. It suits mass plantings, borders, and containers, where a splash of color is desired. Subtle fragrance and minimal upkeep make it an ideal choice for busy gardeners.

Totally Tempted® Watermelon Wine™ Cuphea Care

Plant in moist, well-drained soil enhanced with compost at planting time. Water regularly and feed once a month with a balanced fertilizer to keep foliage dense and encourage new buds. Full sun is ideal, though partial shade is acceptable in hot climates. A slightly acidic to neutral pH supports healthy root growth.

Deadhead spent blooms to maintain a tidy appearance, though this Cuphea often drops old flowers on its own. Pinch back stems to encourage branching and additional flower production. Winter care involves protecting containers from freezing temperatures or moving them indoors if frost is expected. Light trimming in spring removes damaged stems and encourages fresh shoots.

Totally Tempted® Watermelon Wine™ Cuphea Spacing

Place plants 12 to 18 inches apart for a unified display in beds or rows. Closer spacing around 10 inches creates a denser look when forming a groundcover. Containers should be at least 10 inches wide and deep to support root development and future growth. Larger pots provide extra room if you prefer a more prominent focal point.
