Touch of Class Jacob’s Ladder is a great addition to the front of a woodland or shady garden border. Mounds of creamy variegated foliage support delicate stems of the palest blue flowers for weeks in the spring. Touch of Class has a high heat and humidity tolerance and will not wilt in the summer like older varieties that tend to disappear after they have bloomed. Paired with Hostas and Astilbes, this Jacob’s Ladder will provide interest late into the season.
Planting Touch of Class in groups provides the most impact. Beneficial pollinators and butterflies flock to the masses of pendulous blooms. Cutting back the first flower blooms will encourage a second flush of blooms later in the summer. The creamy white and green foliage stays fresh all summer and is a great groundcover to suppress weeds in the garden border.
Touch of Class Jacob’s Ladder Care
Touch of Class Jacob’s Ladder thrives in a shade to part shade spot that has quick draining, but consistently moist soil. A fertile, woodland loam will support this perennial with little need for additional fertilizer. Mulching with leaves or organic compost in the winter and spring will also improve the soil so that it retains moisture better and has more fertility.
Touch of Class needs minimal maintenance in the early spring to get it off to a good start. Cutting back all of the previous year’s foliage and bloom stems will make for healthy and vigorous new growth. Watering is best done with drip irrigation or soaker hoses so that the leaves do not get wet. This will help keep powdery mildew from attacking, especially in high humidity areas. Dividing this perennial should be done every 3-4 years as needed. The new plants will benefit from supplemental watering for the first year.
Touch of Class Jacob’s Ladder Spacing
Touch of Class Jacob’s Ladder has a mature height of 12-18 inches and a spread of 15-18 inches. Plant spacing is recommended at 12 inches on center.
